The Path of Reconnection is a youth center designed for the Toxteth area, aiming to provide spaces for social, educational, and recreational activities. Rooted in Toxteth’s history of social tension and the 1981 riots, the project envisions architecture as a medium to rebuild trust and connection among local youth.
The design concept emphasizes a “gradual reconnection” process—from individuals, to small groups, to the wider community. The building is divided into two main volumes: a smaller, more private wing for learning and self-expression (including art studios, music rooms, IT areas, and a library), and a larger, more public volume for group activities (such as a basketball court, multipurpose hall, and open courtyard). A bridge connects the two, symbolizing unity and transition.
Site-specific analysis informed climate-responsive features like sun-shading louvers on the south façade, skylights for indirect lighting, and a sustainable material palette including red titanium-zinc cladding and wood interiors. Natural ventilation is enhanced through chimney effects created by operable skylights. A rainwater collection system supports sustainable irrigation.
Inspired by precedents like a vocational training center (for its column-free flexible space) and a French cultural center (for its shading façade), the project balances openness with intimacy, function with emotion. More than just a building, it aims to be a catalyst for community healing and youth empowerment.
