Situated in Liverpool’s richly diverse yet socially challenged Toxteth district. The project is inspired by adaptive reuse precedents like Game Streetmekka and Superkilen, embracing an architectural language rooted in inclusivity and energy. Functions are stacked across multiple levels, with a clear zoning strategy—active, public-facing programs such as sport and social spaces are positioned at ground level, while quieter, more private functions such as study and music occupy the upper floors.

Materiality plays a key role in expressing local connection and openness. A red-brick base mirrors the character of surrounding housing, while a perforated aluminium screen wraps the upper levels, softening the massing and creating a light-filtering, semi-transparent veil that blurs inside and out. Colour strategy is carefully considered: red was replaced with a vibrant orange-yellow to avoid football-related tension, while maintaining the visual warmth and vibrancy that counteracts Liverpool’s grey skies.

Sustainable strategies are integrated throughout—from GSHP heating and rainwater harvesting to skylights and solar panels—making the building responsive to its marine climate and energy-conscious in performance.

Ultimately, The Flex seeks to be a spatial embodiment of local pride, youth expression, and regenerative optimism—an architecture that listens, adapts, and uplifts.
