“Sailing Moon is a coastal community and sailing centre designed for Morecambe Bay. The project explores the connection between people and nature, focusing on the elements of sunset, moonrise, wind, and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design is inspired by the shape and movement of sailing boats. The building curves like a boat\u2019s hull and is raised above the ground to let wind and light pass through. The layout is shaped by the sailing programme, with spaces for watching races, gathering as a community, and enjoying the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final moon watching concept takes place outdoors, where visitors can experience the moonrise directly from the race-viewing balcony and the Corten steel pier. These spaces are designed to frame the horizon and allow people to connect with the bay and the sky.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The sunset and moonrise are key experiences in the design. A public balcony faces the bay, offering framed views of the sky as it changes throughout the day. Although an original moonlight skylight wasn\u2019t possible due to the moon\u2019s path, these moments are now celebrated through openings, reflections, and carefully placed views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Materials like Corten steel and stone were chosen to connect with Morecambe\u2019s coastal character and withstand the weather. The design also uses passive strategies, like natural ventilation and daylight, to reduce energy use and enhance comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sailing Moon is about creating a place where the natural elements and human activity come together \u2014 a quiet but powerful architecture shaped by wind, tide, and light.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
