Jamestown Botanical Research Centre
Primarily as an outpost for Aburi botanical gardens, this research centre serves as the capital of Jamestown’s regeneration, while celebrating Ghana’s rich botanical heritage.
The centre is a compact, vibrant hub fostering scientific research, artistic expression, and community engagement. The project sensitively retains and adapts the historic Kingsway Store’s colonnade façade into a bustling marketplace, blending mercantile heritage with contemporary interventions rooted in vernacular principles. By utilising local materials, craftsmanship, and climate-responsive design strategies, the outpost promotes sustainability and cultural authenticity. Miniature botanical gardens weave through the site, creating a living laboratory and green urban refuge that connects nature and architecture in this coastal setting. Transparent laboratory spaces, exhibition areas, and artist residencies will encourage public education and interdisciplinary collaboration. Ultimately, this initiative will support the regeneration of Jamestown, strengthen ecological and community identity, and position Ghana as a leader in botanical research and environmental stewardship.
