This project, focused on the master planning of the Littlewoods Site, on Edge Lane. This project was inspired by the site’s glamorous, art-deco neighbour, the Littlewood’s building. This sparked a Hollywood Boulevard layout on the site, which is intended to be an entertainment forum. As a key design driver, to maintain the linearity along the site, a colonnade, based on The Littlewood’s elevation’s proportion is used. The Boulevard is to be activated with music, dance and fun. Overall, the aim of this project is to restore the glory of the site, driven by the Film and TV production client’s aim to put Liverpool on the entertainment world stage.
At the Semester One phase, a nightclub ‘The Spotlight’ and a small café with an outdoor public plaza, ‘The Recharge’ was designed, at the rear of The Boulevard.
This semester, fronting The Boulevard and addressing Edge Lane, a theatre, ‘The Curtain’, along with an outdoor theatre space, has been designed. ‘The Curtain’, is to create a bold and grand atmosphere. The front (north) and west elevation is dominated by the colonnade, which will be illuminated at night and lined with a red carpet along the front. The public space inside the building is very important, hosting bars and lounges in a double height mezzanine space. A grand, double spiral staircase is pushed into the corner of Edge Lane, that will be illuminated at night, as visitors at the theatre go to take their seats. The theatre hall, with red velvet lined seats, can be accessed on multiple levels to offer a great view for all users.
Overall, The Curtain Theatre, with The Boulevard and other entertainment hubs, aims to create a place for the arts to be displayed, with odes to the Hollywood Boulevard and the site’s glamorous Littlewoods Neighbour.
