The overall theme of this project is displacement. A very strong and touching topic that affects many people across the world. Due to this many individuals face huge challenges every day, adapting to new places and trying to find a stability within is never easy. Therefore, it is crucial to adapt and respond to ways in which displaced people have access to different facilities, feel safe and are a part of a community while allowing for job and educational opportunities.
The individual theme takes displacement to a specific manner, this is harvesting. My scheme allows displaced people to come and live at a lower cost and have access to various types of facilities. Harvesting is what links and connects people together, allowing them to grow in a new place. This is where the names comes from – Growtopia. The stakeholders of my scheme are not only the Liverpool City council, but also LFGN (Liverpool Food Growers Network), a scheme that encourages people to harvest and live a more sustainable life etc. Funded by the council but designed for and with the LFGN.
Key facilities; community kitchen and multiple scales of harvesting is something that really makes the place bloom. The residential scale, located on the balconies where residents have a small place to grow their everyday produce such as herbs. Going scale up, the building scale, the rooftop garden offers each resident to have their own gardening space where larger produce can grow, such as cabbages, carrots etc. Lastly, the industrial scale, the greenhouse allows for more exotic produce, a place that not only acts as a gateway to the site but also generates a uniting place, where food from around the world is grown and used in the café and sold to local markets, additionally creating a place of work.
