‘Common Land’ proposes a new visitor centre in the historic hill town of Mulazzo, situated in the Lunigiana region of northern Tuscany. The project is aimed at celebrating the significance of Lunigiana’s landscape in the cultural and agricultural heritage of the region – moving beyond its aesthetic appeal to acknowledge its role as a source of production, identity, and continuity for the community. The intervention involves the insertion of a lightweight steel framed structure within an existing stone, ex-residential building in the heart of the village. The programme includes exhibition spaces designed to display a variety of artworks, historical artefacts and agricultural tools to narrate the historical connection between Mulazzo and its natural landscape, as well as a meeting room, public library room and a shop and visitor information point. The scheme unfolds as a series of passageways – both external and internal – mimicking the built features of Mulazzo and the terracing of the natural landscape.
