Veil & Wonder: The Public Forum Inspired by Context and Contrast
This privately owned public forum explores the relationship between architectural heritage, elegance and civic openness. Located on Edge Lane – a key arrival route into Liverpool – the form takes direct inspiration from the historic Littlewoods Building, adopting its strong linear massing and monumental presence. In its first impression the design appears elegant, structures, and respectful of its context.
Commissioned by Boodles, a brand known for its high-end, refined design, the project contrasts this linear exterior form with a much softer, sculptural, and a more playful interior landscape. Beyond the formal frontage, a wonder-filled terrain unfolds – a celebration of creativity, art, and public life.
An organic central path winds between the two linear volumes, linking circular resting areas and culminating in a central public plaza. This space encourages informal gathering, organised activities, and offers a more relaxed entrance to each building, making the overall experience feel more welcoming and human focused.
In alignment with the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge, the design places strong emphasis on well-being, health, and comfort. The fluid interior forms not only express creativity but also provide a calming, human-centred experience. Natural materials – including rammed earth, timber, and locally sources limestone – create a tactile and grounding atmosphere.
This forum carefully balances the old and the new, formality and playfulness – a place that reflects its heritage, fits into its landscape, and offers something imaginative, accessible, and deeply connected to people.
