Platform to Promenade - The New Morecambe Market Line

Freya Bullock

The New Morecambe Market Line proposes a new route to celebrate the arrival into Morecambe connecting the station to the seafront, reactivating the town through a dynamic retail, food markets, public spaces and traffic calming measures to give back priority to pedestrians. Once a thriving seaside resort during the early to mid-20th century, Morecambe was known for its vibrant promenade, art deco architecture, and bustling holiday economy. Today, this project seeks to revive that spirit by celebrating the town’s historic identity while responding to the needs of its modern community. The proposal creates a new street from the platform to the promenade, lined with shops, food markets, community and public space, supporting both locals and visitors.

This project is split into phases; phase one focusing on one large retail space which will then be followed by further development phases in the future that will help define the route. The scheme takes influence from the existing Art Deco structures, blending red glazed terracotta, steel structure, and timber interiors to create a modern, characterful and vibrant, route that celebrates the town’s past while supporting its future. This project aims not only to regenerate a neglected part of Morecambe, but to redefine the arrival experience to the town, turning a forgotten passage into a celebratory street that reconnects Morecambe to its coastline, its people, and its past.
