My youth centre design proposes the formation of a vibrant and inclusive civic plaza along Berkeley Street. A prominent climbing tower is the focal point of the design. It acts as a strong visual landmark, anchoring the southern end of the plaza. This tower houses an impressive four-storey climbing wall that ascends from the basement through the building. The climbing wall itself is intended to foster a sense of achievement and confidence in youth members.
The plaza is enriched with greenery and a skate park to encourage active public engagement with the centre. A public café positioned between the plaza and sports hall invites visitors in to inspire community interaction.
A central staircase forms the spine of the building. Visitors can ascend this staircase to an art studio which boasts views of the Anglican Cathedral and neighbouring Greek Orthodox church. This studio features a characteristic sawtooth roof that captures north light and is visible from the plaza below.
The façade combines patterned aluminium mesh and heat-treated pine fins. The mesh clads the tower and studio, reflecting sunlight by day and glowing transparently at night to enhance street safety. The pine fins rotate to offer solar shading and privacy when needed.
Internally, flexible spaces support a wide range of activities, centring youth while remaining welcoming to parents, guardians, and the wider public. These spaces are defined by an exposed glulam frame which aligns with the adjacent church’s geometry, guiding a linear plan.
This is a design rooted in openness—both in form and in spirit.
