When entering Liverpool from one of its major transport routes (Edge Lane), you see the dilapidated Art Deco shell of the former Littlewoods Pools building. A region of Liverpool historically dense with industry and its residents; taken over by bleak retail parks.
The Littlewoods building sits at the centre of a scheme funded by Capital and Centric, designed by ShedKM to create a new centre for film making; with offices, workshops and studios. To expand on the history of the region and this new scheme, my project creates a new Arts and Media campus in Liverpool, expanding the ambitions of the Littlewoods renovation to create a new public space within a Media campus. The project works with the BBC as a client, expanding their influence in the North of England.

The project creates a multi-use theatre and filming studio for the client and associated companies, an office building for the BBC’s operations team, hotel for staff and guests working in Liverpool and an interactive museum for the public. These new spaces will be centred around a new public Piazza for the community, outdoor performances and events.
Phase 1 included the multi-use theatre and filming studio including the BBC office space. Phase 2 includes the hotel and an education centre. A further Phase 3 would bring an interactive museum to conclude the new cultural centre.
The design aimed to be community centric, inviting the public into the private workings of an arts and education campus. The proposals take the influence of the Littlewoods whilst being excitingly unique, exposing expressive Glulam and Steel structures, with the naturally weathering façade materials of Bronze and stone. The site once again becomes an industrious, exciting and welcoming community centre.
